Glasgow is a big hit as a filming location for Hollywood movies and TV shows, due to the city's grid street system and varied architecture. Find out which productions have filmed where.

Batgirl

Glasgow will become Gotham City once again, this time for the filming of Batgirl in November. Pre-production is underway for the latest in the 'DC' extended universe films.

The Control Room

BBC drama The Control Room is currently filming across the city centre and southside, starring rising Glaswegian star, Iain De Caestecker.

Indiana Jones (city centre)

Parts of Glasgow city centre were transformed into 1960s New York for the latest Indiana Jones movie. US flags adorned the streets and an all-American parade marched up St Vincent Street for the fifth instalment in the series. Release date July 2022.

Man & Witch (various locations)

Filming for the children's fantasy adventure, Man & Witch, took place in the city in early 2021. Starring Sean Astin and Christopher Lloyd, the film is set to be a hit amongst fans of 80s cult movies. Release date TBC.

Annika (various locations)

Filming took place for the six-part crime drama Annika in early 2021. Nicola Walker plays the title character who leads a Marine Homicide Unit. Release date on UKTV's Alibi late 2021.

The Batman (Glasgow Necropolis and Cathedral Square)

One of the most historic areas of Glasgow doubled as Gotham City for the filming of superhero blockbuster The Batman. A stunt double for Robert Pattinson, who plays the caped crusader, was spotted zooming around the Glasgow Necropolis on the 'bat bike'. Release date March 2022.

The Flash (city centre)

Superhero Batman was in the city once again, this time for The Flash. Both Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton will star as Batman in this time-travelling story. Release date November 2022.

Tetris (Tradeston)

Glasgow played the part of 1980s Moscow in early 2022 for the filming of Tetris. Star Taron Egerton, of Kingsman and Rocketman fame, stars in the film about the creation of the popular computer game. Release date tbc.

Blind (city centre and Tradeston)

Argyle Street was one of many city centre streets used for filming the remake of the Korean action film, Blind, which stars Bollywood A-lister Sanom Kapoor. Release date TBC.

1917 (River Clyde)

The Steven Spielberg and Sam Mendes film, 1917, was released in January 2020. The city's former Govan Graving Docks at the River Clyde was used as a backdrop for the filming of the WW1 epic. And the setting isn't the only Glasgow link, as the film was co-written by Glaswegian screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

The Princess Switch: Switched Again (Glasgow Cathedral)

Starring Vanessa Hudgens, The Princess Switch: Switched Again filmed a key scene for the Christmas feel-good movie at Glasgow Cathedral. Available to watch on Netflix.

Outlander (Glasgow Cathedral)

The hugely popular TV show, Outlander, has made stars of its cast members, as well as of Scotland's scenery and castles. City locations used for filming include Kelvingrove Park (as Boston Park), the University of Glasgow (as Harvard University) and the medieval Glasgow Cathedral (as a 1740s Parisian hospital). Outlaw King (University of Glasgow)

Outlaw King, starring Hollywood's Chris Pine as Robert the Bruce, used many Glasgow locations for the filming of this epic 14th century tale. The Cloisters at the University of Glasgow were transformed into a grand banquet hall for a medieval feast and Glasgow Cathedral doubled as Greyfriars Church. Available to watch on Netflix.

The Wife (Hutchesons' Hall in Merchant city)

The Wife brought Hollywood royalty to the city. Glenn Close, in an Oscar nominated role (2019), was joined by Christian Slater, as they filmed at various city locations, including Hutchesons' Hall, Barrowland Ballroom and Pollok House. Available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw / Fast & Furious 6 (Merchant city and International Financial Services District)

Also filmed in the Merchant city was parts of Fast & Furious 6 in 2012 and franchise spin-off, Hobbs & Shaw, in 2018. Superstar Idris Elba was in the city for Hobbs & Shaw as high-speed car chases were filmed around the city centre streets, which doubled as London. Available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Wild Rose (filmed extensively in Glasgow)

The Bafta Scotland award-winning film Wild Rose follows a down-on-her-luck Glaswegian country singer Rose and includes performances in the city's famous country music club, Grand Ole Opry, and the stunning Old Fruitmarket. Available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Beats (filmed extensively in Glasgow)

Another Bafta Scotland award-winning film is Beats, a coming-of-age tale following two friends as they attempt to go to their first-ever rave, written by Glaswegian Kieran Hurley. Available to watch on BFI Player and Amazon Prime Video.

The Nest (filmed extensively in Glasgow)

Starring Scottish talent Martin Compston, The Nest followed a Glaswegian couple who enter into a surrogacy pact with a teenage girl. City spots captured on screen and aired in 2022 include Glasgow City Chambers, Kibble Palace and Buchanan Street. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

The side of the grand City Chambers with its blonde sandstone archways and domed turrets sits elegantly on the long Cochrane Street.

Succession (Cochrane Street)

Succession follows the life of a complicated New York family, headed up by Scots actor, Brian Cox. Scenes for season 2 of the acclaimed HBO dark comedy were filmed in George Square, Cochrane Street and Bo & Birdy at Kimpton Blythswood Hotel, with the city doubling as current-day New York. Available to watch on Sky TV.

Patrick Melrose (Cochrane Street)

Benedict Cumberbatch was seen running down many Glasgow city centre streets, such as Cochrane Street, Bothwell Street and St Vincent Street, whilst filming Sky Atlantic drama, Patrick Melrose. The series also featured the famous Barras Market, as New York's Meat-Packing district and Glasgow's oldest restaurant, Rogano. Available to watch on Sky TV.

Past Hollywood blockbusters filmed in Glasgow

World War Z

One of the most exciting set pieces in the Brad Pitt zombie apocalypse movie World War Z took place in Glasgow. The zombie outbreak begins in George Square with people fleeing the chaos in the surrounding city centre streets. Available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Under the Skin

The arthouse alien film Under the Skin was set completely in Scotland. The director used hidden cameras to capture unsuspecting Glaswegians' reactions to the main character's (Scarlett Johansson) actions, included scenes outside Celtic Football Club, Buchanan Galleries and the Trongate. Available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.

Cloud Atlas

In 2011, several of Glasgow's steep streets were used for filming Cloud Atlas to replicate 1970s San Francisco. It's at the junction of George Street at Montrose Street that Halle Berry's character attempts to evade capture from an enemy targeting her in this thrilling time-travelling tale.
